Digital sovereignty and the future of the Internet

The last few years saw the rise of digital sovereignty, the idea that nation States must be able to regulate the big global Internet platforms to uphold competition and user rights. The original Internet policy principles were exploited by a few big and geographically concentrated actors to create “walled gardens”. There is the need to open up these private enclosures and restore the open and decentralized architecture of the Internet.
